The Book of Mormon is a record of Jewish prophets who migrated to the Americas about 600 b.c. and an abridged history of their descendants until their civilization ended in a.d. 421. It also contains an abridged history of a people who migrated to the Americas from the Tower of Babel. The Book of Mormon was translated into English during a two-month period by Joseph Smith at age twenty-four years. Translated by means of Urim and Thummim or seer stone from Reformed Egyptian writings inscribed on gold plates, it was first published in 1830 in Palmyra, New York. Book of Mormon prophets saw the end from the beginning and foretold the coming of Messiah, who appeared to them after his resurrection from the dead. The Book of Mormon’s fidelity to sacred Jewish scriptures is seen in God’s fulfilling his covenants to restore the house of Israel.
